Invented Here! - 2012

Highlighting New England’s Innovators

The purpose of the Invented Here! Program is to celebrate New England innovators, their inventions, and the stories behind their innovations.  Through the Program, the Museum of Science, Boston (“Museum”) and the Boston Patent Law Association (BPLA) is transforming the nation’s relationship with science and technology and providing educational opportunities that inform the public of these fascinating innovators and innovations.

What is Invented Here!?

The Museum and the BPLA collect nominated patents that have issued in the past five years and represent innovations made anywhere in New England.  From the nominated patents, a BPLA Selection Committee submits 12 patents to the Museum.  The Museum then selects the top three patents.  The inventors of the selected patents are honored at an annual Invented Here! event hosted at the Museum.  The technologies are showcased to the public at the Museum throughout the year.

In 2012, a new category was added to recognize inventions claimed in pending published patent applications that have been published in the past five years.

Each year, the finalists are recognized as Top Honorees at an event held at the Museum.  Each honoree is given a custom-framed award.  In addition, each invention is to be featured in various exhibits and programs at the Museum, including special Current Science & Technology presentations and in the planned What is Technology? exhibit.  Inventors may also have the opportunity to make public presentations at the Museum through special lectures and programs.  The BPLA will also publish results in its quarterly newsletter and on its website.

Criteria for Nomination

For a patented invention category, the invention must:

1. be claimed in a patent issued within the last five years;
2. have been developed in New England or by an inventor who resides in New England; and
3. represent a technology that can be described or demonstrated to the general public at the Museum.

For the pending published patent application/Fan Favorite category, the invention must:

1. be described in a published patent application published within the last five years;
2. have been developed in New England or by an inventor who resides in New England; and
3. represent a technology that can be described or demonstrated to the general public at the Musuem.
