In-House Practice


The Corporate (In-House) Practice Committee seeks to inform members about IP-related issues that are of interest to in-house patent practitioners, whether IP specialists or generalists, including attorneys, patent agents and paralegals. The Committee also hopes to update Committee members on best practices for in-house IP work and to keep the Committee members informed of relevant changes to patent, trademark and trade secret law. Information and updates will be provided at meetings and programs covering topics such as:

  • Setting and Tracking a budget for IP departments and IP-related projects;
  • Conducting IP due diligence and assisting due diligence performed on your company; 
  • Coordinating your work and reporting to Management and other in-house departments, including
    • Working in a Matrixed environment
    • Allocating roles and responsibilities
    • Risk management and setting expectations
  • IP Protection Strategies and Cost Containment, including
    • Patent filing strategy
    • Foreign filing strategy
    • Trade-offs between different forms of protections and their costs.
  • Managing IP litigation, including
    • Preparing your company for offensive or defensive IP litigation
    • Working with your Litigation Department and Outside Counsel in strategy setting and managing litigations
    • Budgeting and decision making.
  • Automating the Corporate Patent Process  and Setting up Efficient IP Docketing Systems;
  • Third party software and services, including Patent Search Tools;
  • Keeping up with law changes and new obligations, such as Patent Marking Requirements, etc.
  • Managing Outside Counsel Effectively and Getting Value from Outside Counsel and Value Based Billing.

The Committee welcomes comments and suggestions for speakers on the above topics and encourages members to contact the co-chairs regarding their interests.
