BPLA’s First Annual PTAB Summit

Whether you are new to AIA trials or a seasoned veteran, we hope you will join the Contested Matters Committee for an interactive discussion with PTAB stakeholders and PTAB practitioners. Come share and learn about the evolution of PTAB practice.

Opening Remarks

Erika H. Arner,

Finnegan; President-Elect of the Newly Launched PTAB Bar Association

Panel Discussion I: Life After Federal Circuit Appeals at the PTAB

The Federal Circuit has decided well over 100 cases, and the Supreme Court has already decided one case originating from a PTAB trial in Cuozzo Speed Technologies, LLC v. Lee, No. 15–446., (U.S. June 20, 2016). This growing body of appellate precedent holds many lessons for stakeholders in PTAB trials, and for the PTAB itself. Our panelists will explore how PTAB practice has changed over the past four years, and how the Federal Circuit’s rulings are impacting PTAB practice.

Rachel L. Emsley, Finnegan

Hon. Scott Daniels, Administrative Patent Judge, USPTO;
John Pint, Senior IP Counsel, Philips Intellectual Property & Standards; and
Cory C. Bell, Finnegan

Panel Discussion II: Life Sciences at the PTAB

Life sciences petition filings were off to a slow start at the PTAB. In the last few years, their share has been steadily increasing. The panel will explore what has changed, what IPRs are being used for, and where  the PGRs are that many expected would play a significant role in the life sciences.

Andrej Barbic, Ph.D., McCarter & English

Hon. Zhenyu Yang, Administrative Patent Judge, USPTO;

Wendy S. Plotkin, Associate General Counsel, Biogen Idec;
Henry H. Gu, Assistant General Counsel, IP, Ariad Pharmaceuticals; and
