Join us for a lively discussion of current trends in biotechnology patent litigation.  The panelists will discuss recent developments impacting Section 101 and Markman hearings, as well as the particular challenges surrounding litigating life sciences patents, including those arising from the COVID-19 crisis.

Claire Laporte is Head of Intellectual Property at Ginkgo Bioworks. She designed its IP strategy and provides strategic oversight of Ginkgo’s patent portfolio, trade secrets, and other knowledge assets. She also assists Ginkgo in addressing policy issues relevant to synthetic biology. Previously, Claire served the life science industry as a trial lawyer in private practice focusing on patent and trade secret cases.  She also leveraged her litigation knowledge to help life science companies with a range of transactional issues.  Claire has spoken widely on the role of intellectual property in both industrial policy and health care, including at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories, Harvard University, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and other institutions.

Jake Holdreith is a partner at Robins Kaplan.  Mr. Holdreith leads the firm’s Health and Life Sciences Industry Group and serves as a member of the firm's Executive Board. Mr. Holdreith counsels clients and tries complex lawsuits including intellectual property, regulatory and constitutional litigation. He understands the unique challenges of operating in complex legal and regulatory environments, and he is an experienced courtroom advocate in Hatch-Waxman cases. He has handled cases in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Chelsea Loughran is trial attorney and post-grant practitioner focusing on complex patent litigation and post-grant matters, including interferences. She specializes in patent litigation and post-grant matters in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device fields. Chelsea has experience litigating cases in federal district courts across the country as well as the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).
