Celebrating New England's Breakthrough Inventions & Inventors
The purpose of the Invented Here! Program is to celebrate New England innovators, their inventions, and the stories behind their innovations. Through the Program, the Boston Patent Law Association (BPLA) is transforming the nation’s relationship with science and technology and providing educational opportunities that inform the public of these fascinating innovators and innovations.
Since its inception in 2010, the Invented Here! Program has recognized 49 inventions and over 170 inventors for their contributions to the greater good based on their ingenuity and inventiveness. The program has recognized the inventions and inventors in a variety of ways.
During the first iteration, which ran from 2010 to 2011, submissions were accepted for inventions that had been patented in the past five years and been developed in New England, or at least had an inventor who resides in New England. Over 70 submissions were received in the inaugural year, and 12 inventions representing 42 inventors were selected for recognition for their inventive contributions. Further, three of the inventions representing eight inventors were designated as the top honorees of the program. The three top honoree inventions related to high performance bioplastics, lithium ion batteries, and powered orthotic devices.
In the second iteration, held in 2012, submissions were again accepted for inventions that had been patented in the past five years and been developed in New England, or at least had an inventor who resides in New England. 10 new inventions representing 51 inventors were selected for recognition for their inventive contributions. 3 inventions representing 16 inventors from the first iteration were also recognized again. The recognitions included honoring a “fan favorite” published application related to a pending published patent applications that have been published in the past three years. The three top honoree inventions related to bone fixation methods, lasers, and orthotics for ankles, and the top honoree among published patent applications related to flexible cushioning pads for safety gear.
In the third iteration, held in 2013, submissions were accepted in both the granted patent and published application categories described above. 15 new inventions representing 45 inventors were selected for recognition for their inventive contributions; 1 invention representing 6 inventors was also recognized again. The three top honoree inventions related to lasers, location-positioning systems based on digital pulses from lights, and lawn seed, and the top honoree among published patent applications related to the monolithic fabrication of three-dimensional structures.
In the fourth iteration, held in 2014, submissions were again accepted in both the granted patent and published application categories described above. 11 new inventions representing 32 inventors were selected for recognition for their inventive contributions; 4 inventions representing 15 inventors were also recognized again. The three top honoree inventions related to nanostructured antennas, ultrasound probes, and wireless electricity, and the three published patent applications that were honored related to mass spectrometry, the mass production of fish embryos, and footwear support structures.
In the fifth iteration, held in 2015, we awarded the first annual Jacob ("Jesse") N. Erlich Achievement Award to Mr. Stanley Abkowitz in lieu of honoring the most recent patented inventions. Mr. Abkowitz was honored for his significant contributions in the titanium industry as he obtained patents in each of the past seven decades (1950s through 2010s) and continues through today.
In the sixth iteration, being held in 2016, we again will be recognizing the most recent patented inventions. Additional details about this year’s nomination process can be found here.
The BPLA’s Invented Here! Committee will announce the honorees for the 2016 Invented Here! Program in the Fall 2016. The selected honorees will be serving as representatives of all innovators of New England’s innovation community.
